Liverpool SMEs urged to embrace sustainability

Small businesses in Liverpool are being urged to embrace sustainability in a new nationwide campaign, following figures released by ScottishPower revealing that 41% of SMEs don’t monitor their energy use.

ScottishPower has partnered with the Great British Business campaign to support the SME sector, which makes up 99% of the 5.7 million businesses in the UK.

The campaign sheds light on the ways in which the utility company is working with small businesses to help them strive towards a more sustainable future, including offering simple, practical tips to reduce energy and investing in digital technology to make monitoring energy consumption easier than ever. ScottishPower has also worked with energy efficiency experts, the Carbon Trust to promote a new toolkit as part of the campaign. The toolkit provides individual businesses with a bespoke action plan to save energy.

Ian Sanderson, Operations Manager at The Tiki Bar + Kitsch Inn, one of the businesses also involved in the Great British Business campaign, wants to encourage other SMEs to embrace sustainability: “We embarked on our energy efficiency journey about a year ago and it has made a massive difference to our business. By making small changes such as installing LED lighting, we’ve noticed a decrease in energy consumption which has ultimately helped us save money.”

Late last year, ScottishPower undertook a survey of UK SMEs to understand attitudes towards energy efficiency. It found that 41% don’t monitor their energy usage in any way and are therefore missing out on opportunities to save vital funds that can be invested elsewhere in their business.

ScottishPower invests £4m every working day to deliver cleaner, smarter power for its customers. Last year, the business announced that 100% of its electricity will come from renewable sources and, through its involvement in the Great British Business campaign, wants to inspire its small business customers to also prioritise sustainability.

Mr Sanderson continued: “The energy efficiency toolkit on the ScottishPower website helped us to identify changes we can make within the business to save money and protect the environment. For other businesses looking to go green, it’s important to step back and take a look at your business – try making small changes at a time, they make a big difference.”

Neil Clitheroe, Global Retail Director at ScottishPower, said: “The reality is, any SME can save considerably on their energy consumption through simple behavioural changes.

“That’s why, in 2016, we established a relationship with the Carbon Trust and worked with them and our own business customers to develop digital tools that give SMEs the information they need to become more energy efficient. This sits at the heart of our online account management, which helps businesses monitor and manage energy use, allowing them to be in control and spot opportunities to save money.

“In a nutshell, you limit your profits and your growth if you don’t prioritise energy efficiency. As an energy supplier, we believe it is really important to support our business customers who are in turn supporting us to build a long -term energy solution for the future.”

The Great British Business campaign aims to engage the SME sector through the mediums of digital, social media and TV to support them in the current climate. It aims to promote the businesses that form the backbone of the UK’s economy and inspire them to continue to drive the UK business sector forward.
