SP Energy Networks has invested £527million over the last 12 months to upgrade and maintain its electricity networks including in Merseyside to futureproof it and make it more resilient when hit by winter storms.

Although power cuts are rare, the network can be vulnerable to extreme weather and thousands of SP Energy Networks engineers have been working hard throughout the year to strengthen the network and minimise the risk of power outages for its customers in Merseyside.

This maintenance work is part of SP Energy Networks’ eight-year investment plan, which will invest £5billion into the electricity network by 2023.

Stephen Stewart, Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “We are committed to futureproofing the network in Merseyside and making it more resilient during adverse weather. Our investment plan gives customers the benefits of the most up-to-date technology with fewer disruptions and power cuts.

"New technology and ongoing maintenance ensures that customers across Merseyside will have a reliable electricity network that meets the needs of homes and businesses for decades to come.”

As winter takes its hold, SP Energy Networks is running a national customer awareness campaign to promote the national 105 freephone emergency hotline and the SP Energy Networks hotline, 0800 001 5400. In the event of a power cut, these numbers should be used by customers to report the incident.

SP Energy Networks owns and manages overhead and underground powerlines in Merseyside as well as Southern and Central Scotland, Cheshire, North Wales and North Shropshire. For more information, visit spenergynetworks.co.uk.
