The MTD pilot for VAT is now open for sole traders and companies

The Making Tax Digital pilot for VAT is now open for sole traders and companies who are up to date with their VAT. Traders who have incurred a default surcharge in the past two years will be able to join in November.

Certain exclusions will apply to those able to join the pilot, including:

Groups of companies;
Those trading with the EU;
Businesses based overseas;
Businesses accounting for VAT under the annual accounting scheme and make payments on account;
Businesses that operate the flat rate scheme; and
Businesses newly registered for VAT.

HMRC have also announced a six-month delay until October 2019 in mandating some businesses, these include:

Trusts;
Non-for-profit organisations that are not trading as a company;
VAT divisions;
VAT groups;
Public bodies;
Local authorities;
Public corporations;
Traders based overseas;
Companies required to make payments on account; and
Annual accounting scheme users.

We would recommend that if you are VAT registered and will be mandated into the MTD for VAT regime in April 2019 you engage with the pilot scheme. This will enable you to familiarise yourself with the new processes prior to them becoming compulsory and iron out any teething problems which may occur.
