Join us at Smarter Travel LIVE! to hear about exiting new opportunities in the smart mobility and digital innovation sectors.

Smarter Travel LIVE! is Europe's established and popular annual conference and networking event for professionals and experts working in intelligent mobility, smart city planning and active travel. In 2018 we are excited to bring the event to the Liverpool City Region, in partnership with Merseytravel, ArrivaClick and Stagecoach. Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor for the Liverpool City Region, plans to use this major industry event as a launchpad for his portfolio of innovative transport schemes and said: "I am looking forward to welcoming Smarter Travel LIVE! to the Liverpool City Region this October. “It is fitting that Europe’s main gathering of professionals working to design and deliver smarter public transport systems will meet in a city region with the ambition to improve connectivity, drive growth and deliver a fully integrated 21st century system.

“This creative community is a perfect match for our innovation ambitions, and I am delighted to be able to host the speakers, delegates and exhibitors in our dynamic city region as we plan for a future that supports better, healthier and more efficient mobility choices."

Smarter Travel LIVE! 2018 will provide a roadmap to smarter, cleaner and more active mobility options in towns and cities. It is one of Europe's best gatherings for networking, with a buzzing Awards Ceremony showcasing the best of European mobility innovation, and one of the largest smarter mobility exhibitions in the UK. There is also the unique Street of the Future, an immersive yet practical experience showcasing technologies and sustainable transport solutions in an open, exploratory environment. Follow the road to see smart street lighting, Electric Vehicles and EV charging infrastructure, smart data collection devices, parking sensors, air quality monitoring products and the full range of devices and products that are making cities smarter, safer and cleaner.

New opportunities: new Government funds recently announced
The event covers innovation and digital transformation across all modes of travel, and has at its core the intention of supporting more clean and safe mobility options for more stages of every journey. The Government has been very active in this sphere lately – and many of the new announcements will be of interest to business and local government alike in the Liverpool City Region – with government ministers launching initiatives to improve information on routes, fares and ticketing for bus passengers, a Road to Zero low emissions strategy, a Future of Mobility Grand Challenge and a Last Mile Call for Evidence aimed at revolutionising freight and cargo deliveries. It's worth taking a closer look at these new projects, and and what opportunities these developments may open up for the region.

First, the Bus Services project, which requires bus operators and local authorities to publish information digitally for buses in England, will make it easier for bus passengers to plan their journeys through access to routes and timetables data, fares and tickets data, and accurate, real-time information. This is an opportunity that many new businesses in LCR's healthy digital innovation sector will be interested in, for example creating travel apps and journey planners.

The Road to Zero strategy is setting out new measures to clean up road transport, with plenty of new funding available, including R+D and innovation grants to enable regional innovation partnerships in low emission design and manufacturing. There is also:

• A £400 million Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund to help accelerate charging infrastructure deployment, including workplace, public, home, HGV and wifi charging solutions
• Funds for future-proofing streets: street lighting columns will, in future, include charging points in areas with current on-street parking provision

• A second round of funding, a minimum of £6 million, for local authorities to roll out dedicated taxi charging infrastructure

The first stage of the major Future of Mobility Grand Challenge is ushering in a profound change in how we move people, goods and services around our towns, cities and countryside. Government ministers talk of a wave of electric cargo bikes, vans, quadricycles and micro vehicles that could replace vans in cities as part of plans to transform last-mile deliveries, vastly reducing emissions and congestion around the country. Again, there are lots of opportunities for regional businesses. As ministers note: 'There are already 4,000,000 vans on our roads and, with online sales continuing to increase, this is likely to increase further. But new green delivery vehicles could replace the millions of conventionally-fuelled vans which are currently a common sight in city centres.'

Smart shared transport
Liverpool has recently become the first UK city to run ArrivaClick, the Arriva UK Demand-Responsive Transport (DRT) solution, the largest service of its type in the UK. The innovative new minibus service aims to help tackle air quality issues and congestion by enabling people to move out of cars with the offer of convenient, comfortable shared journeys that complement the existing bus network. ArrivaClick is an intelligent, on-demand service that takes multiple passengers heading in the same direction and books them on a shared vehicle. There are no fixed routes, with journeys determined by where passengers want to go within an area running from the city centre to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. In future, the potential increased use of on demand, shared use services like these could allow the majority of parking spaces to be removed in city centres, opening areas up for redevelopment and potentially hundreds of thousands of new urban homes. And that's just the beginning, so join us to see what opportunities there are for you
as the new mobility revolution comes to Liverpool.
